Location:
Moltrasio is located on the western shore of Lake Como, the municipality extends from the waters of Lake Como to the slopes of Monte Bisbino, it consists of eleven hamlets: Borgo, Casarico, Carisciano, Creolino, Somaino, Luscesino, Vignola, Casarevolo, Roiano, Tosnacco, Vergonzano, Vighinzano.
The town has very ancient origins, copper objects have been found dating back to 2000 BC, and other finds testify to the presence of the Gauls in 200 BC and later the Romans in the area. The city"s heyday was around 1100 when the Comacini masters used Pietra Moltrasina to construct churches and basilicas. In 1400 Moltrasio allied itself with neighbouring Como.
The sunny position, the mild climate and the beautiful villas make Moltrasio an ideal place for vacations and stay. The composer Vincenzo Bellini frequented the villas of the village; in Villa Salterio he composed La Straniera and part of La Sonnambula. Gianni Versace bought Villa Fontanelle in 1977, and it took three years of renovation under the direction of the famous fashion designer, who always liked Moltrasio and Lake Como. Another splendid villa is Villa Passalacqua, built at the end of the 18th century by the Odescalchi family. In 1787 it was acquired by Count Andrea Lucini Passalacqua, who hosted essential personalities such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Winston Churchill.
Of particular interest are the churches of Moltrasio: the parish church of San Martino, frescoed by the Recchi brothers, the ancient church of Sant"Agata and the oratory of San Rocco. Every year in November, there is the patron saint festival in honour of San Martino, with stalls selling typical products, local handicrafts, and culinary delights from Lake Como, from alpine cheeses to missoltini.
